Dog Friendly City Guide: Washington, D.C.
Washington DC's monuments and leafy circles make it a fine city to walk a dog.

Washington is a walking city, and a surprisingly good one for a dog. The monuments and the Mall give you miles of open green to cross on foot, the row-house neighbourhoods keep a tavern on every corner, and the city's bars lean political in the best way. It is a compact, leafy capital where a dog fits the rhythm, somewhere between the marble and the beer garden.

Each place below has been checked as genuinely dog friendly, and the hotels at the end are ranked against the Roch Dog Friendly Standard.

Where to Walk

The set-piece walk is the obvious one. A walk of the monuments and memorials takes you the length of the National Mall, past the marble and the reflecting pools, with the dog welcome the whole way. For something gentler, Georgetown and the waterfront trades the crowds for cobbles and the Potomac, Barracks Row threads the historic Capitol Hill strip, and the leafy circles of Farragut Square and Garfield Park give you a quick green break between appointments.

The Bars and the Beer Gardens

Washington drinks in taverns, and the dog is a regular. Bar Dupont holds down Dupont Circle, the Roosevelt-themed Teddy & the Bully Bar does politics with a wink, and Union Pub is the Capitol Hill staple. When the weather turns warm, The Midlands and the open-air metrobar spread out under the sky, and The Grill DC keeps the kitchen going. For a quieter bite, Bread & Chocolate does the all-day cafe and Buddy's DC the neighbourhood plate.

Where to Stay

Which leaves the bed. Washington's certified hotels have each been assessed and ranked against the Roch Dog Friendly Standard on what they actually do for a dog and its owner, not on what the booking page claims.

The Kimpton Hotel Monaco leads the certified list on a B, with the Beacon Hotel and the grand Jefferson Hotel close behind, each rated and reviewed so you know what the welcome is worth before you book.
