Dog Friendly City Guide: San Jose, California

A dog friendly guide to San Jose: the Almaden Quicksilver hills and the city trails, Silicon Valley's pubs and pizza, the best barbecue, and its certified dog friendly hotels.

Dog Friendly City Guide: San Jose, California
The downtown San Jose skyline, the low-key capital of Silicon Valley and gateway to the Almaden hills.

San Jose is the quiet giant of the Bay Area, and it suits a dog better than its tech reputation suggests. The weather is the best in the region, the southern hills hide an old quicksilver-mining park laced with trail, and downtown and Santana Row keep the patios open year round. Skip the freeway image: Silicon Valley's capital is a sunny, low-key, walkable place to be out with a dog.

Everything below comes from our own verified data, not the booking-site badges that pass for research elsewhere. Each place has been checked as genuinely dog friendly, and the hotels at the end are ranked against the Roch Dog Friendly Standard.

Where to Walk

The headline is the southern hills. Almaden Quicksilver County Park preserves an entire nineteenth-century mining landscape in trail: the Mine Hill loop climbs through the old works, and the longer New Almaden circuit past Webb Canyon makes a proper half-day on the lead.

Over toward Santa Teresa, the Coyote Peak loop climbs to a valley view. Carry water: these are open, sun-baked hills, best walked in the cool of the morning.

The Pubs and the Patios

San Jose drinks local and casual. Trials Pub and The Brit do the British end, Jack's and the Firehouse No. 1 Gastropub the downtown gastropub, and Good Karma the vegan beer bar. Up on Santana Row the V Bar and the W XYZ Bar keep the smarter patios, and the Vintage Wine Bar pours downtown. The dog even has a restaurant named for it: Lazy Dog, with a patio and a menu for both of you.

The Table

For the plate, Sam's Bar-B-Que is the San Jose smoke institution, Grill on the Alley the downtown steak, and Las Cazuelas the Mexican. For a slice there is plenty: A Slice of New York, Pizza Antica, High Five and the wood-fired Willow Street. The Cafe San Jose and Sourdough Eatery cover the breakfast end.

Where to Stay

Which leaves the bed. San Jose's certified hotels are each assessed and ranked against the Roch Dog Friendly Standard on what they actually do for a dog and its owner, not on what the booking page claims.
