Dog Friendly City Guide: San Antonio, Texas, USA
A dog friendly guide to San Antonio: the River Walk Mission Reach and the greenways, the city's icehouses and breweries, the best Tex-Mex and pizza, and its certified dog friendly hotels.
San Antonio takes it slow, and the dog sets the pace. The River Walk has a quieter southern stretch made for walking, the Spanish missions string along the river, and the city's beloved icehouses keep an open-air welcome year round. It is warm, historic and unhurried, a Texas city that does the patio and the paseo better than most.
Everything below comes from our own verified data, not the booking-site badges that pass for research elsewhere. Each place has been checked as genuinely dog friendly, and the hotels at the end are ranked against the Roch Dog Friendly Standard.
Where to Walk
The famous River Walk has a dog-friendly half: the Mission Reach runs south from downtown past the Spanish missions, quieter and greener than the tourist stretch, with the missions themselves strung along it. For more space, the Salado Creek Greenway threads the north side from Hardberger Park, McAllister Park does the big shaded loop, and Woodlawn Lake gives you the easy water circuit.
The Icehouses and Breweries
The San Antonio icehouse is the dog's natural home, and The Friendly Spot in Southtown is the great one: open-air, family-and-dog-mad, all welcome. Around it, Blue Star Brewing, Künstler Brewing, Longtab Brewing and Roadmap Brewing pour their own, the dog-named Black Laboratory Brewing and Mad Dogs carry the theme, and LadyBird and the Cottage Pub keep the patios full.
Tex-Mex, Pizza and the Table
The food is the other reason to linger. Casa Rio does the original River Walk Tex-Mex, Sanchos the modern version, and NOLA Restaurant the Louisiana end. Stella Public House and Pizza Italia keep patio room for a slice, and Sam's Burger Joint and Local Coffee round it out.
Where to Stay
Which leaves the bed. The hill-country Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and the historic Emily Morgan Hotel by the Alamo both sit on a C in San Antonio's certified list, each rated and reviewed so you know what the welcome is worth before you book.
