Dog Friendly City Guide: Phoenix, Arizona, USA

A dog friendly guide to Phoenix: the desert mountain trails of South Mountain and Shaw Butte, the city's dog-named brewpubs and hot-dog spots, and its certified dog friendly hotels.

Dog Friendly City Guide: Phoenix, Arizona, USA
Phoenix is desert-mountain hikes and brewpubs, best enjoyed in the cooler months.

Phoenix is a desert city ringed by mountains, and the dog gets the run of them, weather permitting. South Mountain and the Phoenix Mountains put rugged desert trail within the city limits, the brewpubs keep a misted patio for the heat, and the welcome is genuine ten months of the year. Go in the cool season, walk early, carry water for both of you, and keep off the pavement in summer.

Everything below comes from our own verified data, not the booking-site badges that pass for research elsewhere. Each place has been checked as genuinely dog friendly, and the hotels at the end are ranked against the Roch Dog Friendly Standard.

Where to Walk

The hiking is the draw, and the dog is built for it in the cooler months. South Mountain is the giant, its National Trail and the Holbert climb running up to the Dobbins Lookout over the whole valley. North of downtown, Shaw Butte and Trail 100 thread the Phoenix Mountains, and further out the Sonoran Preserve and Telegraph Pass open up the gentler desert.

Brewpubs and Hot Dogs

Phoenix drinks craft and casual. O.H.S.O. Brewery, Pedal Haus, Huss Brewing and Grand Avenue Brewing all keep a dog-friendly patio, while Blue Hound Kitchen, the George & Dragon and the Attic Ale House do the bar.

For the plate, the dog-named Short Leash Hotdogs does the hot dog, Welcome Diner the comfort food, and Sip Coffee & Beer the caffeine.

Where to Stay

Which leaves the bed. The Kimpton Hotel Palomar downtown and the hacienda-style Hermosa Inn in Paradise Valley both earn a B, each rated and reviewed so you know what the welcome is worth before you book.

The full list of certified dog friendly hotels in Phoenix shows how every one was ranked, and what that ranking buys you and your dog.
