Dog Friendly City Guide: Miami, Florida

A dog friendly guide to Miami: the off-leash dog beaches and bayfront walks, the city's Brickell and Wynwood patios, the best Cuban food and pizza, and its certified dog friendly hotels.

Dog Friendly City Guide: Miami, Florida
Miami's skyline from Biscayne Bay, where the dog beaches and bayside trails run for miles.

Miami gives a dog something rare in America: a beach where it can actually swim. Between the off-leash dog beaches, the bayfront promenades and a year-round patio season, this is a city built for being outside with a dog, in sunglasses, at a leisurely pace. Add Cuban coffee on every corner and a craft-beer scene in Wynwood, and the only real problem is the heat.

Everything below comes from our own verified data, not the booking-site badges that pass for research elsewhere. Each place has been checked as genuinely dog friendly, and the hotels at the end are ranked against the Roch Dog Friendly Standard.

The Dog Beaches and the Bay

This is the headline: Miami has off-leash dog beaches. Haulover Dog Beach and its Bark Park let dogs into the Atlantic, and Bark Beach does the same on North Shore. For a leashed stroll, the Brickell Bay and Brickell Key waterfront paths loop the downtown bayfront, Bayfront Park anchors the centre, and the Art Deco District walk takes you the length of South Beach. The Coconut Grove dog park gives the southside its off-leash run.

The Patios of Brickell and Wynwood

Miami drinks and eats outdoors. American Social and Batch Gastropub keep the Brickell crowd, the dog-named Dogtown Brickell builds it into the name, and Glass & Vine sets its tables under the trees in Coconut Grove.

Lincoln's Beard Brewing does the craft beer, Barceloneta and Pubbelly the smart small plates, and Panther Coffee the Wynwood cortadito.

Cuban, Pizza and the Table

The food leans Latin and excellent. Bella Cuba and Latin Cafe do the Cuban classics, Pura Vida the healthy end, and River Oyster Bar the seafood. For a slice, Frankie's Pizza and Pizza Bar keep the door open.

Where to Stay

Which leaves the bed, and Miami delivers. Two of its certified hotels earn an A: the downtown InterContinental Miami and the beachfront Loews Miami Beach. The art-deco Betsy Hotel on Ocean Drive follows on a B, each rated and reviewed so you know what the welcome is worth before you book.
