Dog Friendly City Guide: Houston, Texas, USA
A dog friendly guide to Houston: the bayou parks from Memorial to Hermann, the city's icehouses and pubs, the best barbecue and pizza, and its certified dog friendly hotels.
Houston is enormous, flat and humid, and it does dog-friendliness the easy way: outdoors, in the shade, with a cold drink. The city threads its bayous with hike-and-bike trails, keeps its beloved open-air icehouses running year round, and treats the patio as the default. You will drive between things, but once you arrive the welcome is wide and the barbecue is excellent.
Everything below comes from our own verified data, not the booking-site badges that pass for research elsewhere. Each place has been checked as genuinely dog friendly, and the hotels at the end are ranked against the Roch Dog Friendly Standard.
Where to Walk
Houston walks its bayous and its parks. Memorial Park, bigger than Central Park, is the green giant with a web of colour-coded loops, and Hermann Park does the cultivated, museum-district version. The Buffalo Bayou and Brays Bayou trails follow the water across the city, the Heights Hike and Bike does the leafy in-town stroll, and the Houston Arboretum keeps a pocket of forest inside Memorial Park.
The Icehouses and Pubs
The Houston icehouse is a dog's natural habitat, and the West Alabama Ice House is the original: open-air, no-frills, all welcome. Around it, Heights Bier Garten and the Post Beer & Wine Garden spread out under the oaks, Holler Brewing pours its own, and the pubs hold up the rest: Lucky's Pub, McElroy's, Molly's and the dog-minded Underdogs Pub. For wine, MAX's Wine Dive and Montrose Cheese & Wine pour by the glass.
Barbecue, Pizza and the Table
The food is the reason to stay. Roegels Barbecue does the brisket, Goode Company Seafood the Gulf catch, and Coppa Osteria the Rice Village Italian. For a slice, Star Pizza and Bollo Woodfired Pizza keep patio room, and BB's Cafe brings the Tex-Orleans Cajun, with The Hot Dog Shop doing exactly what it says.
Where to Stay
Which leaves the bed. Houston's two top certified hotels both earn a B: the intimate, art-filled La Colombe d'Or in a Montrose mansion, and the lavish Post Oak Hotel in Uptown. Each is rated and reviewed so you know what the welcome is worth before you book.
