Dog Friendly City Guide: Austin, Texas, USA

A dog friendly guide to Austin: the creek greenbelts and swimming holes, the city's dog-mad breweries and beer gardens, the best barbecue and pizza, and its certified dog friendly hotels.

Dog Friendly City Guide: Austin, Texas, USA
Austin keeps it weird and keeps it dog friendly, from the greenbelts to the beer gardens.

Austin keeps it weird, and it keeps it dog friendly. This is a city built around water and shade and live music, where the default at any beer garden, taco trailer or brewery taproom is a yes, a water bowl and a patio.

Dogs swim in the creeks, sprawl under the oaks at the breweries, and pad along miles of greenbelt that thread the city. The summers are brutal and the spring is perfect, so plan around the heat and the rest takes care of itself.

Everything below comes from our own verified data, not the booking-site badges that pass for research elsewhere. Each place has been checked as genuinely dog friendly, and the hotels at the end are ranked against the Roch Dog Friendly Standard.

Where to Walk

Austin walks along its creeks. The Roy Guerrero trails give you Secret Beach, a genuine sandy swim spot on the Colorado a few minutes from downtown, while the Walnut Creek and Boggy Creek greenbelts run for shaded miles through the east side.

Up in the hills, Bull Creek has the swimming holes the dogs make a beeline for, and St. Edwards Park hides a waterfall in the north-west. For something flatter, the State Capitol grounds and the 360 Bridge overlook give you the views without the climb.

The Breweries and Beer Gardens

If Austin has a natural habitat for a dog, it is the brewery patio. Zilker Brewing, Pinthouse Brewing, Austin Beerworks and Oddwood Brewing all pour to a crowd of lurchers and labs, and The Brewtorium and Vacancy Brewing keep the run going.

The standout is Yard Bar, a bar built around an off-leash dog park, though the Austin Beer Garden Brewing Company and the famously small Tiniest Bar in Texas prove you do not need a yard to be welcome.

The Bars and the Table

Beyond the beer, the bars keep the door open. Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill and Drinks Backyard sprawl outdoors, Foxy's Proper Pub, the Draught House Pub and The Hideout Pub do the proper-pub thing, and Aviary Wine & Kitchen pours by the glass.

For the table, La Barbecue is the brisket worth the queue and Clark's Oyster Bar the smart seafood, while Home Slice and Pinthouse Pizza keep patio room and Houndstooth Coffee and The Brew & Brew cover the caffeine.

Where to Stay

Which leaves the bed, and Austin delivers. The Four Seasons on Lady Bird Lake is the only hotel in the city to earn an A, with three more on a B close behind: the genteel Commodore Perry Estate, the music-minded Hotel Van Zandt on Rainey Street, and the hill-country Hotel Viata. Each is rated and reviewed so you know what the welcome is worth before you book.
