Dog Friendly City Guide: Savannah, Georgia
A dog friendly guide to Savannah: Forsyth Park and the riverfront, the squares and the Skidaway trails, the British pubs and craft breweries, the best coffee, and its certified dog friendly hotels.
Savannah was made for walking a dog, and it knows it. The historic district is a grid of shaded squares under Spanish moss, the riverfront runs along the water, and the city's famous open-container rule means you can carry a drink from one square to the next with the dog at your side. It is genteel, walkable and unhurried, the South at its most welcoming.
Everything below comes from our own verified data, not the booking-site badges that pass for research elsewhere. Each place has been checked as genuinely dog friendly, and the hotels at the end are ranked against the Roch Dog Friendly Standard.
Where to Walk
The green heart is Forsyth Park, the great oak-shaded square at the foot of the historic district, with its fountain and its paths. Down on the water the Savannah Riverfront runs the length of River Street, and a short drive south the avenue of oaks at Wormsloe gives you the postcard walk.
For real trail, Skidaway Island spreads out its loops: the Big Ferry and Sandpiper trails wind through the marsh, and Johnny Mercer's Moon River sits just beyond.
The Pubs and Breweries
Savannah drinks on the square and the dog comes too. The British Six Pence Pub and the Sexton Pub keep the traditional end, with Cheers to You and The Public Kitchen & Bar on the patios and the historic 17Hundred90 doing the candlelit-and-haunted.
The breweries run local: 912 Brew, White Whale Craft Ales and World of Beer. And the dog has a spot named for it: The Naked Dog.
The Table and the Coffee
For the plate, Lili's and The 5 Spot do the Southern table, B&D Burgers the patty, and Lulu's Chocolate Bar the dessert-and-cocktail. The coffee scene is a Savannah pleasure: The Coffee Fox, Savannah Coffee Roasters and the charitable Bitty & Beau's, with Friendship Coffee and Cafe M rounding it out.
Where to Stay
Which leaves the bed. Savannah's certified hotels are each assessed and ranked against the Roch Dog Friendly Standard on what they actually do for a dog and its owner, not on what the booking page claims.
