Dog Friendly City Guide: Boston, USA
A dog friendly guide to Boston: walking the Freedom Trail, the harbour and the Charles, the city's historic pubs and brewery taprooms, the best seafood and pizza, and its certified dog friendly hotels.
Boston is a walking city with three hundred years of history underfoot, and a dog is the ideal companion for it. The Freedom Trail, the harbour and the banks of the Charles give you miles to cross on foot, the brick neighbourhoods keep an Irish pub on every corner, and the patios fill the moment the weather allows. It is compact, historic and walkable, the kind of place you do with a dog and a good pair of shoes.
Everything below comes from our own verified data, not the booking-site badges that pass for research elsewhere. Each place has been checked as genuinely dog friendly, and the hotels at the end are ranked against the Roch Dog Friendly Standard.
Where to Walk
The set-piece is the obvious one. Boston's Freedom Trail follows the red line of the city's history from the Common to the harbour, with the dog welcome the whole way, and the Public Garden gives you the prettiest few acres in town.
Down at the water, Boston Harbor and Castle Island is the local favourite for the sea breeze, Deer Island opens up the harbour views, and the Charles River path carries you along the water between the two banks.
The Pubs and Taprooms
Boston drinks in pubs, and the dog is an old hand. The Brendan Behan Pub in Jamaica Plain is the Irish corner local, Bleacher Bar sits inside Fenway's outfield wall, and The Salty Dog keeps Faneuil Hall watered.
For something newer, The Tip Tap Room and Banyan Bar + Refuge do the gastro end, and the breweries hold up the rest: Notch Brewery, Roundhead Brewing and the original Samuel Adams all welcome the dog into the taproom.
Eating, from Seafood to Pizza
For a table, Boston leans on the sea. The Daily Catch does the North End squid-ink classics on the waterfront, Sweet Cheeks Q the barbecue near Fenway, and Coppa the South End Italian. For something quicker, Nicole's Pizza and Upper Crust keep patio room, and Tatte and Ula Cafe cover the coffee between walks.
Where to Stay
Which leaves the bed. Boston's two top certified hotels both earn a B: the waterfront Boston Harbor Hotel, with the boats at its door, and the Eliot Hotel in the Back Bay, an all-suite classic near the Charles. Each is rated and reviewed so you know what the welcome is worth before you book.
