# The Lobby Dog: How Fairmont Gave Its Grand Hotels a Resident Dog

- Description: Some of Fairmont's grand hotels keep a dog of their own, a canine ambassador who greets arrivals in the lobby and, at several, will take a guest out for a walk. The Queen patted one in Vancouver in 2002, Boston gave one a plaque and a day of her own, and you can still meet the dogs today.

In 2002 Queen Elizabeth II stayed at the Fairmont Waterfront in Vancouver during her Golden Jubilee visit, and she took the time to pat a black Labrador called Morgan. The hotel still tells the story on its [own history page](https://www.fairmont.com/zh/hotels/vancouver/fairmont-waterfront/story.html?ref=rochsociety.com), where Morgan is "our beloved hotel dog". Morgan was the hotel's own dog, and at a string of Fairmont hotels that job carries a title. The dog in the lobby is a canine ambassador: a member of staff with four legs, a bed in the lobby and, at the best of them, a diary of guests waiting to take it for a walk.

## Catie, Boston's Famous Lab

The dog who made the idea famous arrived two years later at the Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston. The hotel dates the start of its "canine journey" to 2004, when it welcomed Catie Copley, a black Labrador adopted from the Guide Dog Foundation. Its [canine ambassador page](https://www.fairmont-copley-plaza.com/stay/canine-ambassador/?ref=rochsociety.com) remembers her as a local celebrity, gentle with the hotel's youngest guests, and the inspiration for two children's books, Catie Copley and Catie Copley's Great Escape.

She also did a job that matters to anyone who travels without their own dog. The [Animal Rescue League of Boston](https://www.arlboston.org/city-boston-cements-catie-copleys-legacy/?ref=rochsociety.com), whose clinic on Chandler Street cared for her for years, recalled that guests who were missing their pets were invited to take Catie out for a walk. When she died in May 2017, aged 16, the city treated it as a civic loss. The Mayor's office proclaimed 23 June 2017 Catie Copley Day, a plaque was unveiled on the outside of the hotel, and the hotel gave $1,000 to the League in her memory. The plaque is still there on Dartmouth Street.

## The Dog Who Rode the Luggage Cart

Catie's successor came from the shelter rather than the guide dog school. Carly Copley joined in 2013, adopted from the Animal Rescue League, and the hotel's account of her reads like a staff file written by people who loved her. She threw a December birthday party that sold out, she spent a good deal of every day asleep in the lobby, and she liked to ride on the bell cart, the hotel says, pretending to be luggage. She retired in 2019 and died not long afterwards.

The third ambassador, Cori Copley, started that autumn. She is a black Labrador from the Guide Dog Foundation, like Catie, and she began training as a guide dog before the foundation decided her gifts lay in hospitality. A dog judged better at greeting strangers than at guiding one turns out to be exactly the dog a hotel wants, and the story repeats across Fairmont's lobbies. Cori spends her day on a bed in the lobby, watching the travellers go by and taking belly rubs from anyone who asks. Her keeper is the concierge Joe Fallon, who looked after Catie before her.

## How to Walk a Hotel Dog

Cori keeps an appointment book. The concierge team runs her schedule, and guests can book her for a walk around Copley Square or for an appearance at an event. She also has a wedding role. Ahead of International Dog Day in 2025, Fairmont said in a [release carried by Hospitality Net](https://www.hospitalitynet.org/news/4128326/fairmont-hotels-resorts-gives-dog-owners-their-pups-something-to-celebrate-this-international-dog-day?ref=rochsociety.com) that couples booking the hotel's Pawfect Union package can have Cori as a ceremonial witness, and called her the hotel's most photographed member of staff. The hotel's [own offers page](https://fairmont.com/copley-plaza-boston/offers/fairmont-furiend?ref=rochsociety.com) says it is world famous for its welcome to dogs thanks to the programme, and its Fairmont Furiend offer, bookable to the end of 2026, adds a Boston Barkery biscuit box for the visiting dog.

The walk is the part worth planning around. A dog in the lobby is a nice thing to see. A dog you can take out for half an hour in a strange city, when your own is a thousand miles away at home, is the reason some people choose the hotel.

## Where the Ambassadors Came From

The Copley dogs set a pattern the rest followed: dogs from guide and assistance dog schools, or from shelters, given a job where their friendliness counts for something. In September 2011 the Fairmont Pittsburgh announced its own ambassador, Edie, a white Boxer and Labrador cross who had trained as a puppy in the assistant dog programme at Circle Tail in Pleasant Plain, Ohio. The [announcement](https://www.hospitalitynet.org/appointment/79002293.html?ref=rochsociety.com) said she would welcome guests in the lobby and walk with them around the hotel, and encouraged guests to visit the other canine ambassadors at Fairmont hotels across North America.

Washington followed the same route. The Fairmont Washington, D.C., Georgetown says its hotel dog, Georgie, was a trainee for Guiding Eyes for the Blind before she was reassigned to the hotel. Its [Puppy Love package](https://www.fairmont.com/en/hotels/washington-dc/fairmont-washington/offers/puppy-love.html?ref=rochsociety.com), on sale to the end of 2026, honours that start in life: it brings treats made in the hotel's pastry kitchen, a walking map of the nearby dog parks, and a $25 donation to Guiding Eyes for every stay.

In Sonoma wine country the resident dog has a title to match the setting. Chardonnay, a Golden Retriever trained by Canine Guardians in Napa, is Director of Pet Relations at the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa. The resort keeps [office hours for her](https://www.fairmont.com/en/hotels/sonoma/fairmont-sonoma-mission-inn-spa/activities/meet-chardonnay-fairmont.html?ref=rochsociety.com): she is in the lobby from 9 to 11 in the morning and 2 to 4 in the afternoon, Monday to Friday, and part of every guest's pet fee goes to Pets Lifeline, the Sonoma shelter.

## The Dogs on Duty Now

Back in Vancouver, where the Queen met Morgan, the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver lists a Labrador ambassador named Elly on its [own pages](https://www.fairmont.com/en/hotels/vancouver/fairmont-hotel-vancouver.html?ref=rochsociety.com), and has gone as far as a beer. Its dog package comes with a four pack of Lobby Dog Lager. And the just opened Fairmont Tokyo, the brand's first hotel in Japan, has a dog of its own, Serene, with the title Chief Happiness Officer.

The most walkable of them all may be in the mountains. At the Fairmont Banff Springs, the hotel's [dog page](https://banff-springs-hotel.com/stay/pet-friendly?ref=rochsociety.com) introduces Lily, its canine ambassador, there to welcome you and your own dog to the castle in the Canadian Rockies. Lily will go out on walks with guests, booked through the hotel's guest experience platform. Dogs staying at the hotel pay $50 per room per night, which covers deep cleaning, and $15 of that goes to the Bow Valley SPCA; the room comes with a bed, bowls of fresh water and a welcome gift. Book Lily before you go, and the first walk of the trip is with a dog who lives there.
