- Description: A river you can walk for miles, Spanish missions whose national park welcomes dogs on every trail, and ice houses built for long evenings outdoors. Where to stay, eat, drink and walk with a dog in San Antonio, and the rules that shape the day.

San Antonio is a river city first. The San Antonio River runs through the middle of it, lined with paved paths that carry on far beyond the famous downtown bends, north past the museums and south through open country to a chain of eighteenth century missions. For a dog that means miles of level, watered walking with something to look at the whole way. The other half of the city's character is the ice house, the open air neighbourhood bar where you sit outside with a cold drink, and those were made for dogs long before anyone wrote a dog policy. Come in spring or autumn if you can. Summer here is fierce, and the best of San Antonio with a dog happens early in the morning and after the sun has dropped.

## Getting There With a Dog

A dog arriving in the United States from abroad must meet the rules of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the first question is where it has spent the past six months. If that has been only in [countries the CDC treats as rabies-free or low risk](https://www.cdc.gov/importation/dogs/rabies-free-low-risk-countries.html?ref=rochsociety.com), the dog needs to be microchipped, at least six months old, and travelling with a receipt for the CDC Dog Import Form, which you complete online before you fly. Time in any [country on the CDC's high-risk list for dog rabies](https://www.cdc.gov/importation/dogs/high-risk-countries.html?ref=rochsociety.com) brings extra paperwork and stricter checks, so read the [CDC's guidance on bringing a dog into the United States](https://www.cdc.gov/importation/dogs/index.html?ref=rochsociety.com) before you book anything. Once you are here, with the hotels, the parks and the far end of the Mission Reach spread across the city, a car makes the stay much easier.

## Where to Stay

Both hotels below have been inspected and ranked, and both were last certified in September 2026.

[Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort](https://rochdog.com/dog-friendly-hotel/hyatt-regency-hill-country-resort-spa?ref=rochsociety.com) holds a C and gives a dog the most room. The resort is [built on 300 acres of the historic Rogers-Wiseman family ranch](https://www.hyatt.com/hyatt-regency/en-US/sanhc-hyatt-regency-hill-country-resort-and-villas?ref=rochsociety.com) on the western edge of the city, next to SeaWorld and about twenty minutes from downtown, with a 27 hole golf club, the Windflower Spa and a 950 foot lazy river, the Ramblin' River, shaded by live oaks. Your dog is welcome in the lounge and in the garden, and finds a bed and proper food and water bowls in the room. Staff will suggest walking routes and hand over poo bags, and a settled dog may be left in the room while you go to dinner. Dogs up to 50 pounds stay in designated rooms, the fee is $150 a stay, and there is no deposit.

[The Emily Morgan Hotel](https://rochdog.com/dog-friendly-hotel/the-emily-morgan-hotel--a-doubletree-by-hilton?ref=rochsociety.com), ranked D, is the place to stay for history. It is a [1920s building overlooking the Alamo](https://www.emilymorganhotel.com/?ref=rochsociety.com), now in its centenary year, a short stroll from La Villita and three blocks from the River Walk. Most rooms take dogs, up to two of them, your dog can join you in the lounge, free treats are waiting, and the staff will point you to the best walks nearby. Dogs up to 50 pounds are accepted, the fee is $50, and a refundable deposit of $60 a night applies.

## Eat and Drink

San Antonio drinks outdoors, and the places that say so plainly on their own pages are the ones to trust.

The [Friendly Spot Ice House](https://thefriendlyspot.com/?ref=rochsociety.com) on South Alamo Street in Southtown is the classic. It is an ice house in the old sense, a neighbourhood yard with more than 300 beers and 76 taps, a kitchen serving from noon until midnight, and "Dog Friendly" written into its own description alongside kid friendly. A few streets away on East Cevallos Street, [Dos Sirenos Brewing](https://dossirenosbrewing.com/?ref=rochsociety.com) is a brewery with brunch every day from 11 until 2 and trivia on Wednesday nights, and its own page welcomes well behaved, leashed dogs in its outdoor area.

North of downtown on North Alamo Street, [Roadmap Brewing Co.](https://www.roadmapbrewing.com/faq?ref=rochsociety.com) answers the question directly in its taproom FAQ: it welcomes all well behaved dogs on a leash, and asks you to step outside if your dog keeps barking or is upset. It runs a coffee bar too, until 3pm every day, with a resident food truck for burgers, so it works as well for a morning flat white as for an evening pint.

Up the river at the Pearl, the former brewery that is now the city's liveliest dining quarter, [Otto's Ice House](https://ottosicehouse.com/?ref=rochsociety.com) sits on the shady bank of the San Antonio River with a patio, live music several evenings a week and a house motto that calls it family friendly and dog friendly. It is a natural stop on a Museum Reach walk.

On the north side near the university, [Chicken N Pickle](https://chickennpickle.com/location/san-antonio/?ref=rochsociety.com) on UTSA Boulevard pairs pickleball courts with a kitchen and bar, and its [own FAQ](https://chickennpickle.com/faq/?ref=rochsociety.com) is clear: it is dog friendly, and dogs are allowed in any outdoor space. Further out still, on the way into the Hill Country at the Dominion, [The Lion and Rose](https://thelionandrose.com/pet-friendlymenu/?ref=rochsociety.com) is a pub that lists a pet menu alongside its brunch, lunch and dinner menus.

## Walks and Parks

The [River Walk](https://www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com/?ref=rochsociety.com) is the walk. Through downtown it is a shaded ribbon of stone paths a level below the streets, and north of the centre the [Museum Reach](https://www.sariverauthority.org/parks-trails/san-antonio-river-walk-museum-reach/?ref=rochsociety.com) carries it on, three miles of quieter, greener pathway past the San Antonio Museum of Art to the Pearl. In the city's parks the rule is simple: [pets must be on a leash at all times](https://www.sa.gov/files/assets/main/v/1/parks/documents/frequently-asked-questions-for-parks-and-facilities-in-parks.pdf?ref=rochsociety.com).

South of downtown the river becomes the [Mission Reach](https://www.sariverauthority.org/parks-trails/san-antonio-river-walk-mission-reach/?ref=rochsociety.com), an eight mile linear park restored by the San Antonio River Authority, with more than sixteen miles of trail for walkers and cyclists along both banks. The authority asks you to [keep your pets on a leash and pick up after them](https://www.sariverauthority.org/parks-trails/recreation/?ref=rochsociety.com). The trail links the missions of [San Antonio Missions National Historical Park](https://www.nps.gov/saan/planyourvisit/hikebike.htm?ref=rochsociety.com), each about two and a half miles from the next, and the National Park Service is generous with dogs: [pets are welcome at each mission complex and on all trails](https://www.nps.gov/saan/planyourvisit/pets.htm?ref=rochsociety.com), on a leash no longer than six feet. They stay outside the mission churches and the visitor centres, so take turns going in. Ask a ranger about the BARK Ranger programme and your dog can earn its own tag. The park warns that summer temperatures often pass 103 degrees and that the sun can make the pavement too hot for paws, so walk it early.

On the north side, [Phil Hardberger Park](https://www.philhardbergerpark.org/dog-parks?ref=rochsociety.com) is the best all round day out for a dog. Its two fenced dog parks, one off Northwest Military Highway and one on Blanco Road, are shaded, with separate areas for small dogs, water fountains, obstacle courses and play shelters. Beyond the fences there are woodland and savanna trails, among them the Oak Loop and the Savanna Loop, and a land bridge built as a wildlife crossing, with an elevated skywalk. The park is open sunrise to sunset.

For more off leash running, [McAllister Park](https://www.sa.gov/Directory/Departments/Parks/Parks-Facilities/Parks/Directory/McAllister-Park?ref=rochsociety.com) has a dog park near its Starcrest entrance, 2.42 fenced acres with exercise equipment, benches and its own walking trail, though no lights, so go in daylight. Closer to the missions, the city opened a [new dog park at Concepción Park](https://www.sa.gov/Directory/News-Releases/City-Opens-New-Dog-Park-at-Concepcion-Park?ref=rochsociety.com) in May 2026, three quarters of an acre with separate areas for small dogs and all dogs, shade trees, dog drinking fountains and opening hours from 5am to 11pm.

## A Day Out

Start at first light on the Mission Reach. Park near Mission Concepción, walk south along the river to Mission San José and back while the air is still cool, and let the dog have a run at the Concepción Park dog park before the heat builds. Spend the middle of the day in the shade at the hotel. In the late afternoon, head up the Museum Reach from downtown to the Pearl for a drink on the patio at Otto's Ice House, then finish in Southtown with supper in the yard at The Friendly Spot as the evening cools.

## Good to Know

On city ground your dog stays on a leash everywhere except inside a fenced dog park. In the dog parks the [city's own rules](https://www.sa.gov/Directory/Departments/Parks/Parks-Facilities/Parks/Specialty-Parks-Amenities/Dog-Parks?ref=rochsociety.com) apply: no more than two dogs per handler, a leash always to hand, dogs at least four months old and fully vaccinated, dogs in heat kept at home, food, treats and toys left outside, and any dog showing aggression taken out at once. Phil Hardberger Park adds that [dogs must wear a collar and current licence tag](https://www.philhardbergerpark.org/park-rules?ref=rochsociety.com) and must never be left unattended. At the missions, dogs wait outside the churches and visitor centres, and the leash is six feet at most. At the venues above, dogs sit outside, on the patio or in the yard, unless the place tells you otherwise. From May to September, plan walks for early morning and evening, carry water for the dog, and test the pavement with the back of your hand before you set out.
