Some of the busiest dogs in Rochester work at the hospital. Since 2004 the [Mayo Clinic's Caring Canines](https://www.mayoclinic.org/about-mayo-clinic/volunteers/minnesota/service-areas/caring-canines?ref=rochsociety.com) have visited patients, visitors and staff in the hospital, each dog a registered therapy animal with a volunteer handler, on shifts that never run longer than two hours. Rochester is the city in southeast Minnesota that people travel to for the Mayo Clinic, and a dog that comes along on the trip needs a lake to walk round in the morning, a wood to climb into on a free afternoon and a patio for the evening, and the city has all three within a short drive of the clinic.

## Flying In From Overseas

A dog that has spent the last six months only in countries the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention](https://www.cdc.gov/importation/dogs/index.html?ref=rochsociety.com) treats as free of dog rabies, or low risk, has the simplest route in. It must be [at least six months old](https://www.cdc.gov/importation/dogs/rabies-free-low-risk-countries.html?ref=rochsociety.com), carry a microchip a universal scanner can read, look healthy when it lands, and travel with the receipt from the CDC Dog Import Form, on paper or on a phone. The receipt holds good for six months. A dog that has been in a high-risk country in that time follows a longer set of rules depending on where it was vaccinated, and an unvaccinated dog from one of those countries is turned away.

## Where to Stay

The Berkman sits on 14th Avenue SW, in a 13 storey building that went up a few hundred feet from Mayo Clinic Hospital's [Saint Marys campus](https://www.postbulletin.com/business/new-hotel-to-open-within-berkman-apartments?ref=rochsociety.com), with apartments above and the hotel taking floors four, five and six. For anyone whose appointments are at Saint Marys, that is a walk rather than a drive. Most rooms take a dog, of any weight, and there is a space on site set aside for dogs. The fee is $150 for the whole stay with no deposit held, and you may leave a calm dog in the room during appointments, which on a long day matters most. Pack the bowls, bed and bags yourself. See [The Berkman review](https://rochdog.com/dog-friendly-hotel/the-berkman?ref=rochsociety.com).

Nearer downtown, the Centerstone Plaza Hotel Soldiers Field stands on 6th Street SW, a block up from Soldiers Field Memorial Park. The dog is welcome beside you in the lounge, on the terrace and out in the garden, with free treats and no limit on size. It costs $10 a night for each dog and stops at $100 however long you stay, which is a real kindness on a stay measured in weeks. Tell reception if you leave the dog in the room, bring its bowls, and read [the Centerstone Plaza Hotel Soldiers Field review](https://rochdog.com/dog-friendly-hotel/centerstone-plaza-hotel-soldiers-field--mayo-clinic-area?ref=rochsociety.com).

## Eat and Drink

[Twigs Tavern & Grille](https://www.twigstavernandgrille.com/?ref=rochsociety.com) shares the Centerstone's address, and its patio is the reason to go. Tables sit among glowing fires beside a little stream, a garden with dozens of lanterns spreads out beyond the main patio in the warm months, and gas heaters take the edge off a cold evening. Rochester Magazine named it the city's best outdoor dining, and the restaurant's own word for the patio is dog friendly. Walleye is on the menu, as it should be in Minnesota.

Northwest of downtown on 6th Street NW, [Forager Brewery](https://www.foragerbrewery.com/foragerfest-2026?ref=rochsociety.com) pours its own beer and bakes wood-fired pizza in a brewery The Takeout named the best in Minnesota. Ask whether the dog can come and Forager says yes to the patio and no to the restaurant inside, so plan to sit out. A street away on 7th Street NW, [Kinney Creek Brewery](https://www.kinneycreekbrewery.com/?ref=rochsociety.com) calls itself Rochester's first brewery and tells dog owners it loves their dogs too. Dogs stay outside with you on either of its two large patios, and since Kinney Creek lets you bring your own food or order in, a takeaway and a pint on the patio with the dog makes an easy supper.

Out on the northwest side, [LTS Brewing Company](https://www.ltsbrewing.com/taproom?ref=rochsociety.com) has an outdoor patio under a covered tent where pets are welcome, with yard games on a grass lot behind the bar. The brewery itself admits that "patio season won't last long here in Minnesota", so take the dog while it lasts. For more patios in the centre, the [Rochester Downtown Alliance](https://www.downtownrochestermn.com/events/DogsDowntown?ref=rochsociety.com) keeps its own list of downtown restaurants whose patios welcome dogs.

## Lakes, Woods and the Dog Parks

Rochester holds [more than 3,500 acres of parkland and over 148 miles of trails](https://www.rochestermn.gov/activities-parks-culture/parks-trails?ref=rochsociety.com), and the place many of them meet is [Silver Lake Park](https://www.rochestermn.gov/council-administration/plans-reports-studies/silver-lake-park-master-plan/?ref=rochsociety.com), 134 acres a few minutes from downtown that the city has kept as a park since 1937\. The loop round the water is the obvious first walk, and the trail network runs off it in every direction; in summer, [Experience Rochester](https://www.experiencerochestermn.com/things-to-do/outdoor-adventure/parks/?ref=rochsociety.com) notes, you can hire a canoe or a paddleboat there too.

For a longer walk in the woods, [Quarry Hill Park](https://www.qhnc.org/about.html?ref=rochsociety.com) on the northeast side covers 329 acres with more than eight miles of paved and hiking trails, a pond and a sandstone cave carved in 1882\. The nature center inside it has been open since 1973, and the trails are open from dawn to dusk every day. From the high ground you look back over the treetops to the towers of downtown. The lead stays on here throughout: the [nature center](https://www.qhnc.org/?ref=rochsociety.com) quotes City Ordinance 45.B10, which keeps dogs leashed at all times in Quarry Hill Park.

Closer to the hotels, [Soldiers Field Memorial Park](https://www.rochestermn.gov/news/posts/soldiers-field-memorial-park-improvements-receive-statewide-award-of-excellence/?ref=rochsociety.com) has just come through $23.5 million of improvements, finished in 2025, that added trail connections, native plantings and pollinator meadows, and won a state award of excellence in 2026\. Further north, [Indian Heights Park](https://www.experiencerochestermn.com/things-to-do/outdoor-adventure/parks/?ref=rochsociety.com) is 40 acres of bluff about three and a half miles north of downtown off Elton Hills Drive, with drop-offs and steep quarry walls to keep a dog well back from, and [Essex Park](https://www.experiencerochestermn.com/things-to-do/outdoor-adventure/parks/?ref=rochsociety.com), ten miles out off 55th Street NW, is 160 mostly wooded acres of unpaved trails with an old barn on the grounds.

When the dog needs to run, the city keeps two off-leash parks: [River Road Park](https://www.rochestermn.gov/activities-parks-culture/parks-trails/dog-parks/?ref=rochsociety.com) on West River Road NW, north of 62nd Street NW, and the Jean & Carl Frank Canine Park on Pinewood Road SE, north of Pinewood Elementary School, which [Experience Rochester](https://www.experiencerochestermn.com/planning-tools/traveling-with-pets/?ref=rochsociety.com) describes as having walking trails and several fenced areas.

## Good to Know

The city's rules for the [two dog parks](https://www.rochestermn.gov/activities-parks-culture/parks-trails/dog-parks/?ref=rochsociety.com) are short. Dogs arrive and leave on the lead, must be licensed and vaccinated, and stay within your sight and under voice control; carry something to clean up with at all times, and leave a dog in heat at home. Owners are liable for any damage or injury their dog causes.

Elsewhere, the city's [May 2026 reminder](https://www.rochestermn.gov/news/posts/city-of-rochester-reminds-residents-of-pet-rules-in-parks-and-public-spaces/?ref=rochsociety.com) sets out where the lead goes on: on streets and pavements, on maintained park trails, and near playgrounds, picnic shelters, sports fields and paved areas whenever other people are there. A lead may be no longer than ten feet, and waste must be picked up straight away. Rochester also asks that any dog over four months wear an [ID tag](https://rochestermn.qscend.com/311/knowledgebase/article/814?ref=rochsociety.com) with your name and phone number, or carry a microchip with current details.

For the hours you spend inside the clinic, the city's tourist board lists day care and boarding near the campus on its [travelling with pets page](https://www.experiencerochestermn.com/planning-tools/traveling-with-pets/?ref=rochsociety.com).
