- Description: Leeds is the big Victorian city of West Yorkshire, with a 700 acre park bought by its council in 1871, a country estate at its eastern edge where dogs run off the lead, and a seven mile trail from the university to the woods. Where to stay, drink and walk with a dog in Leeds.

In 1932 a man called Frank Thompson opened an amusement park six miles north of Leeds, with a swimming pool, a miniature railway, a zoo and a boating lake, and six years later, with war coming, it shut. The council took it over in 1945 and filled in half the lake. What is left is [Golden Acre Park](https://discoverleeds.co.uk/things-to-see-and-do/outdoors/golden-acre-park?ref=rochsociety.com), 179 acres of woodland and gardens where the city's tourist board warns, with feeling, that there are more squirrels than you would expect. Leeds is like that all over: a big Victorian city in West Yorkshire, built on wool and printing, with a great deal of green space that once belonged to somebody else and now belongs to the dog.

## Arriving From Abroad

A dog coming to Leeds from overseas needs what the government sets out for [pets entering Great Britain](https://www.gov.uk/bring-pet-to-great-britain?ref=rochsociety.com). Microchip the dog first, then vaccinate it against rabies, and wait at least 21 full days before you travel; depending on where you start, the vet will issue a pet passport, an animal health certificate or a Great Britain pet health certificate. A vet must also treat the dog for tapeworm between 24 hours and five days before you land, unless you are coming straight from [Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Malta or Norway](https://www.gov.uk/bring-pet-to-great-britain/tapeworm-treatment-dogs?ref=rochsociety.com).

Banned breeds are refused unless they hold a Certificate of Exemption, and a dog that fails the checks can spend up to four months in quarantine at your cost. For the paperwork step by step, read our pieces on [the US to UK flight](https://rochsociety.com/us-to-uk-with-a-dog/) and on [crossing the Irish Sea](https://rochsociety.com/britain-and-ireland-with-a-dog/).

## Where to Stay

The building on Wade Lane went up in 1964 as the Merrion Hotel, and after a long rebuild it reopened as the [Ibis Styles Leeds City Centre Arena](https://www.tcs-plc.co.uk/portfolio/ibis-styles?ref=rochsociety.com), 134 rooms in the Arena Quarter beside the Merrion Centre, under a mile from the station. The design leans on the city's past, with the looms and printworks that made Leeds rich, and [Yorkshire characters etched on the glass](https://www.visitleeds.co.uk/ukreiif-accommodation-directory/ibis-styles-leeds-city-centre-arena/?ref=rochsociety.com) of the wet rooms.

Dogs of any size are welcome, and the room has a bed, bowls and free treats waiting. Downstairs the dog comes with you to the bar, the restaurant, the lounge and the terrace. It costs £100 a dog for the stay with no deposit, and the dog stays with you rather than alone in the room. It holds a B on rochdog.com; read [the Ibis Styles Leeds City Centre Arena review](https://rochdog.com/dog-friendly-hotel/ibis-styles-leeds-city-centre-arena?ref=rochsociety.com).

For a building with more swagger, [The Met Hotel](https://www.leedsmet-hotel.com/?ref=rochsociety.com) on King Street opened in 1899 as the Hotel Metropole. Its architects were Chorley, Connon and Chorley, the terracotta front was made by [JC Edwards of Ruabon](https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101375038-hotel-metropole-city-and-hunslet-ward?ref=rochsociety.com), and the cupola on the roof was taken from the fourth White Cloth Hall, which stood on King Street before it. Meals are at Gott's Bar & Kitchen, and the dog may join you there and in the lounge. Most rooms take a dog of any size, with a bed and bowls laid out, for £30 a night and nothing held as a deposit; plan the day so the dog is never left in the room. See [The Met Hotel review](https://rochdog.com/dog-friendly-hotel/the-met-hotel-leeds?ref=rochsociety.com).

The grandest of the four is [The Queens](https://www.thequeensleeds.co.uk/?ref=rochsociety.com) on City Square, opened on 12 November 1937 by the Princess Royal and Lord Harewood, Art Deco behind a [face of white Portland stone](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queens%5FHotel,%5FLeeds?ref=rochsociety.com), with the station on its doorstep. It has 232 bedrooms and Vivek Singh's Cinnamon Kitchen, where afternoon tea is served as High Chai. Up to two dogs stay free of charge, of any size, with bowls in the room and a place beside you in the lounge. Read [The Queens Hotel review](https://rochdog.com/dog-friendly-hotel/the-queens-hotel?ref=rochsociety.com).

Close to the Royal Armouries, the [Holiday Inn Express Leeds City Centre Armouries](https://rochdog.com/dog-friendly-hotel/holiday-inn-express-leeds-city-centre--armouries-an-ihg-hotel?ref=rochsociety.com) is the practical choice, and the only one of the four that lets you go out for the evening without the dog: tell reception, make sure the dog is calm, and the room is its own until you are back. Two dogs can share a room, big ones included, for £20 a pet, and they sit with you in the bar, in the lounge and out on the terrace.

## Eat and Drink

South of the station in Holbeck, [Northern Monk Refectory](https://www.northernmonk.com/pages/northern-monk-refectory-and-garden-lds?ref=rochsociety.com) sits on the floor above the brewery's first Leeds brewhouse, in a Grade II listed former flax store at Marshalls Mill. Its answer to the dog question begins with "Yes!": well behaved dogs are always welcome in the Refectory and in the beer garden out front, where DJs play and a bar opens for the summer. Fratello's runs the kitchen Wednesday to Sunday, promising pizza with "New York soul and Neapolitan heart". The station's south entrance is about seven minutes' walk away.

A few minutes further along the canal, [Water Lane Boathouse](https://waterlaneboathouse.com/contact/?ref=rochsociety.com) on Canal Wharf says plainly that dogs are very welcome in all areas. It goes further than most: it publishes its own dog policy, holds a Scruffs dog show every year and runs a separate Instagram account for its canine regulars, Water Lane Doghouse. The kitchen serves from 11.30 every day.

Up the Otley Road in Headingley, the road that runs north from Woodhouse Moor, [Arcadia](https://okells.co.uk/pub/arcadia/?ref=rochsociety.com) is a beer bar run by Okell's that lists itself as dog friendly, and a good first or last stop for anyone walking the Meanwood Valley Trail.

In south Leeds, the cafe at [Leeds Urban Bike Park](https://www.leedsurbanbikepark.com/cafe?ref=rochsociety.com) cooks everything in house, from full breakfasts and handmade burgers to cakes and ice cream, and says simply, "We are Dog friendly too." It opens Tuesday to Sunday, until 8pm on Wednesdays.

## The Parks, the Estate and the Trail

[Roundhay Park](https://discoverleeds.co.uk/things-to-see-and-do/outdoors/roundhay-park?ref=rochsociety.com) was put up for sale in 1871, and Leeds City Council bought it for £139,000\. It now covers [more than 700 acres](https://www.leeds.gov.uk/parks-and-countryside/major-parks/roundhay-park?ref=rochsociety.com) of rolling parkland, woods and streams around Waterloo Lake, with a quieter top lake kept as a wildlife habitat, and dog walking is one of the things it is best loved for.

At the eastern edge of the city, [Temple Newsam](https://discoverleeds.co.uk/things-to-see-and-do/outdoors/temple-newsam?ref=rochsociety.com) is a Tudor Jacobean house in 1,500 acres of parkland, its gardens formalised in the eighteenth century by Capability Brown. The dog stays outside the house, and everywhere else in the grounds apart from the courtyard it is welcome off the lead.

Golden Acre lies on the A660 between Adel and Bramhope, with car parks off Otley Road and Arthington Road. The walk round the lake is about a kilometre and a half and takes forty minutes, past the heather garden, which the park calls the largest in Europe, the rose garden and the cherry orchard. Some paths are signed for leads. Dogs stay out of the cafe itself but sit on the outdoor decking, where bowls are put out.

Linking the city to Golden Acre, the Meanwood Valley Trail runs seven miles from the statue of H.R. Marsden on [Woodhouse Moor](https://discoverleeds.co.uk/things-to-see-and-do/outdoors/woodhouse-moor?ref=rochsociety.com), the city's first park, bought in 1857 for £3,000 and about a mile from the centre. From there it runs north through the Meanwood Valley nature reserve, a "green artery" in the words of the tourist board. Halfway along, [Meanwood Park](https://discoverleeds.co.uk/things-to-see-and-do/outdoors/meanwood-park?ref=rochsociety.com) spreads 29 hectares of grassland, woodland and meadow along Meanwood Beck, whose water drove mills and machinery from the sixteenth century to the nineteenth; its own page calls it the perfect place to walk the dog. Walk a stretch and turn back, or go the whole way and catch the bus home down the A660.

South of the river, [Middleton Park](https://www.leeds.gov.uk/parks-and-countryside/major-parks/middleton-park?ref=rochsociety.com) covers more than 470 acres, with the Middleton Woods nature reserve, a fishing lake and a visitor centre, and the heritage Middleton Railway at its edge. For the next city west, the Society's [guide to Manchester](https://rochsociety.com/dog-friendly-city-guide-manchester-uk/) picks up the story across the Pennines.

## Good to Know

Leeds sets its dog rules in a council [Public Spaces Protection Order](https://www.leeds.gov.uk/environmental-health/responsible-dog-ownership/dogs-in-public-spaces-protection-order?ref=rochsociety.com). On every road, pavement and roadside verge the dog must be on a lead, one person may walk no more than four dogs, and you must carry bags and show them if a warden asks. A breach can bring a £100 fixed penalty, cut to £80 if paid within ten days.

In the parks, dogs are barred from playgrounds, skate parks, ball courts and tennis courts. At Roundhay they are also barred from Tropical World and Canal Gardens, and go on a lead in the Gardens of the World and across the golf course. At Temple Newsam, Home Farm is closed to dogs and the Walled Garden, the courtyard and the golf course are lead only. At Golden Acre the lead goes on around the lake, the patio and the demonstration garden, and at Middleton beside the lake and the visitor centre.
