Austin lives outdoors, and a dog fits right in. The city is built around a river, its parks run along creeks and greenbelts, and its idea of a good evening is a picnic table in a shaded beer garden with live music somewhere nearby. For a dog that means long wooded walks, a surprising number of places where it can run off the lead, and patios where it is expected rather than tolerated. The city's own parks department keeps a map of its designated off-leash areas, which run from pocket parks of under an acre to metropolitan parks of nearly two hundred. The thing to plan around is the heat, which is serious for much of the year, so the best of an Austin day for a dog comes early in the morning and again after sunset.

## Getting There With a Dog

A dog flying into the United States from abroad has to meet the rules of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the first question is where it has spent the past six months. If that time has been only in [countries the CDC treats as rabies-free or low risk](https://www.cdc.gov/importation/dogs/rabies-free-low-risk-countries.html?ref=rochsociety.com), the dog must be microchipped, at least six months old, and travelling with a receipt for the CDC Dog Import Form, which you complete online before you fly. Time in any [country on the CDC's high-risk list for dog rabies](https://www.cdc.gov/importation/dogs/high-risk-countries.html?ref=rochsociety.com) brings more paperwork and stricter checks at the port of entry, so read the [CDC's guidance on bringing a dog into the United States](https://www.cdc.gov/importation/dogs/index.html?ref=rochsociety.com) before you book anything. Once you have arrived, a car makes the outlying parks easy.

## Where to Stay

The hotel to know first is the [Four Seasons Hotel Austin](https://rochdog.com/dog-friendly-hotel/four-seasons-hotel-austin?ref=rochsociety.com), at 98 San Jacinto Boulevard downtown, and the strongest of our ranked dog friendly hotels in Austin with an A. It is a five star house of 135 rooms where dogs stay free and there is no weight limit, so a big dog is as welcome as a small one. Your dog can join you in the lounge, on the terrace and in the garden, with a bed, bowls and free treats laid out and dog food for sale. The staff are trained to look after dogs, will point you towards good walks, and can arrange dog walking or dog sitting when you need an evening on your own. Only some rooms take dogs, and one dog to a room, so book ahead.

[Hotel Viata](https://rochdog.com/dog-friendly-hotel/hotel-viata?ref=rochsociety.com), at 320 South Capital of Texas Highway to the west of the city, is the most sociable of the four, with a B. Most of its 194 rooms take dogs, and yours is welcome in the bar, the restaurant, the lounge and on the terrace, with a dedicated dog space on site and a bed and bowls in the room. The hotel runs activities and events for dogs and supports pet charities, a settled dog may be left in the room, and the fee is $100 a stay for dogs up to 50 pounds.

## Eat and Drink

Texas is unusually clear about dogs at the table. A state law passed in 2019, [Senate Bill 476, which added Section 437.025 to the Health and Safety Code](https://capitol.texas.gov/tlodocs/86R/billtext/html/SB00476F.HTM?ref=rochsociety.com), lets a restaurant welcome dogs in its outdoor dining area as long as it posts a sign saying so, the dog reaches the patio from outside and never goes indoors, it stays leashed and under control, and it keeps off the seats and tables. The same law stops a city from adding stricter rules of its own.

The pub that makes the most of it is the [Crown and Anchor Pub](http://crownandanchorpub.com/?ref=rochsociety.com), at 2911 San Jacinto Boulevard near the university, known for burgers and queso, with large covered and open patios. Dogs are always welcome on the patio, and the pub keeps water bowls of every size and a steady supply of complimentary dog treats. A short way north, the [Workhorse Bar](https://workhorsebar.com/?ref=rochsociety.com), at 100 East North Loop Boulevard, is a neighbourhood tavern known for its burgers and its patio, which has a covered section and welcomes dogs.

The breweries are where Austin spends its weekends. On the East Side, [Zilker Brewing Co.](https://www.zilkerbeer.com/faq?ref=rochsociety.com), at 1701 East 6th Street, welcomes leashed dogs on its patio, though they stay out of the taproom itself. In the north of the city, [The Brewtorium Brewery and Kitchen](https://thebrewtorium.com/locations/austin-highland?ref=rochsociety.com), at 6015 Dillard Circle, has a shaded outdoor beer garden where leashed dogs are welcome beside a large indoor beer hall that keeps them out. South of the river, [The ABGB](https://theabgb.com/about?ref=rochsociety.com), the Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co. at 1305 West Oltorf Street, makes pizza, sandwiches and its own beer, and counts an afternoon in the shade of its beer garden with your dog among the reasons to come.

For a dog that wants to run while you drink, [Drinks Backyard](https://www.drinksbackyard.com/contact?ref=rochsociety.com), at 6328 South Highway 183, is the answer. Well behaved dogs on leads are always welcome, and past the bathrooms there is an enclosed dog yard where an attended dog can be off the lead for a while.

## Walks and Parks

The city sets the ground rules on [its dog parks page](https://www.austintexas.gov/parks/dog-parks?ref=rochsociety.com). Austin's code requires dogs to be leashed in public places except in the designated off-leash areas, which are marked on the city's [off-leash area map](https://austin.widen.net/s/skvmtsprpv/off-leash-area-map-2026%5F02?ref=rochsociety.com). Inside them, a dog must stay within sight and sound of its handler, must be leashed on the way in and out, must be vaccinated against rabies, and is not allowed in at all if it is in heat. An aggressive dog must be taken out of any public space at once. Parks are generally open from five in the morning until ten at night.

[Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park](https://austin.widen.net/s/skvmtsprpv/off-leash-area-map-2026%5F02?ref=rochsociety.com), at 12138 North Lamar Boulevard, is the walk to start with. Its off-leash area covers 185 acres, much of it wooded trail, where a dog can range far further than in any fenced run. On the far side of the city, [Emma Long Metropolitan Park](https://www.austintexas.gov/department/emma-long-metropolitan-park?ref=rochsociety.com), at 1711 City Park Road, has an even larger off-leash area of 193 acres.

Closer to the centre, [Zilker Metropolitan Park](https://www.austintexas.gov/department/zilker-metropolitan-park?ref=rochsociety.com) is the city's great green space, and two of its corners are set aside for dogs: the Great Lawn, 46 acres at 2100 Barton Springs Road, and Barking Springs, a one acre area at 2105 Andrew Zilker Road. [Red Bud Isle](https://austin.widen.net/s/skvmtsprpv/off-leash-area-map-2026%5F02?ref=rochsociety.com), 13 acres at 3401 Red Bud Trail, and the [Shoal Creek Greenbelt](https://austin.widen.net/s/skvmtsprpv/off-leash-area-map-2026%5F02?ref=rochsociety.com), 31 acres following the creek from 2610 Shoal Creek Boulevard, are both off-leash areas on the city's map, and [Auditorium Shores](https://austin.widen.net/s/skvmtsprpv/off-leash-area-map-2026%5F02?ref=rochsociety.com), three acres at 1100 West Riverside Drive, gives downtown visitors an off-leash run within easy reach of the hotels.

## A Day Out

A good Austin day with a dog begins early at Walnut Creek, before the heat builds, with a long off-lead ramble under the trees. Rest through the middle of the day, then take an evening run on the Great Lawn at Zilker or at Auditorium Shores as the light softens. As the air cools, cross to the East Side for a beer on the patio at Zilker Brewing, or head south to the beer garden at the ABGB for pizza in the shade, with your dog at your feet.

## Good to Know

Heat is the main thing to plan for. Austin's summers are long and hot and the ground holds the heat well into the evening, so walk early and late, carry water, and test the pavement with your hand before a long walk. The city also warns that [harmful algae](https://www.austintexas.gov/algae?ref=rochsociety.com) able to sicken or kill a dog have been found in Lady Bird Lake, most often in summer and autumn, so read its advice before letting a dog drink or swim there. Expect a leash everywhere outside the designated off-leash areas, and clean up after your dog. On restaurant and bar patios your dog stays outside, leashed and off the furniture, and a posted sign is the sign that dogs are welcome.
