Morning in the Luberon starts in the vines. Out between the rows of Syrah and Grenache, the light is soft and gold, the hills are still blue with haze, and a dog trotting ahead on the dusty track has the whole vineyard to itself. Behind you, the stone roofs of an old hamlet catch the sun. This is Coquillade Provence, and the dog is given the run of the estate, not a corner of it. Here the walk begins at your door, and it does not have to end for hours.

## The Setting

Coquillade sits on a hilltop in the heart of the Luberon, just off the D900 near the village of Gargas, about [45 minutes by car from Avignon TGV station and an hour from Marseille Provence Airport](https://coquillade.fr/en/map-access.html?ref=rochsociety.com), with a heliport on site for anyone arriving in a hurry. The estate runs to [42 hectares of vineyards, forest, lavender fields and olive groves](https://coquillade.fr/en/the-village.html?ref=rochsociety.com), and it looks out over the Luberon Regional Natural Park.

The park is the reason to come. The hotel describes it as [home to 270 species of wildlife and hundreds of trails](https://coquillade.fr/en/discover-luberon.html?ref=rochsociety.com), through forest, hills, marshes and ochre canyons, with the hill villages close by: the ochre houses of Roussillon, the proud old residences of Ménerbes, the stone of Gordes and the château at Lourmarin. For a dog, it is a country made of footpaths, and for its owner it is some of the most beautiful walking in France.

## The Hotel Itself

The heart of Coquillade is very old. Legend has it that [Cistercian monks from Sénanque Abbey built the hamlet in the 11th century](https://coquillade.fr/en/the-resort.html?ref=rochsociety.com), and two centuries later the first vines went into the ground. The name comes from the crested lark, the coquilladou in Provençal, a bird that returns to the same patch of land season after season. The Rihs family turned the hamlet into a hotel, which opened in 2008 and has been part of [Relais & Châteaux since 2010](https://coquillade.fr/en/the-village.html?ref=rochsociety.com). It is laid out like a village, with stone paths and sun dappled terraces, and it now holds [two Michelin Keys](https://coquillade.fr/en/awards.html?ref=rochsociety.com).

There are [69 rooms](https://coquillade.fr/en/hotel.html?ref=rochsociety.com), from the Charm Rooms tucked inside the original hamlet to a private villa. The newest are the five [Luberon Suites](https://coquillade.fr/en/luberon-suites.html?ref=rochsociety.com), each named after a nymph (Cyrène, Ida, Elysia, Daphné and Cassiopée), set in a private wing with its own entrance and furnished with antiques from L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and pieces by local artisans. Their terraces are built like the old Provençal aiguier, with hydrotherapy baths set into the wooden decking, and every suite keeps a wine fridge stocked from the estate. Cassiopée, the largest, adds a solarium, a heated lap pool and a private sauna.

The wine is the estate's own. [Domaine de la Coquillade](https://coquillade.fr/en/coquillade-winery.html?ref=rochsociety.com) farms 20 hectares of organic vines on the hillside around the hotel, growing Marsanne, Roussanne, Syrah and Grenache for its AOP Ventoux reds, whites and rosés, and guests can taste them in the cellar or on a guided walk through the vines. The [spa](https://coquillade.fr/en/spa-wellness.html?ref=rochsociety.com) covers 2,000 square metres, with a [heated indoor pool, sauna, hammam, Kneipp basins, an ice fall and three outdoor hot tubs](https://coquillade.fr/en/spa.html?ref=rochsociety.com), and the [cycling centre](https://coquillade.fr/en/cycling-overview.html?ref=rochsociety.com) sits a kilometre from the Véloroute du Calavon, part of the EuroVelo 8 route along the Mediterranean. The kitchens draw on a [4,000 square metre organic vegetable garden](https://coquillade.fr/en/sustainability.html?ref=rochsociety.com), and the honey at breakfast comes from the estate's own hives.

## The Welcome

At Coquillade the dog is a guest, and the hotel treats it as one from the moment it arrives. Its [Very Important Pet package](https://coquillade.fr/en/pets.html?ref=rochsociety.com) puts a cosy bed in the room, a bowl of water and a bowl of food, a plush bone and a box of treats, and in the finer room categories a calming spray and a Coquillade scarf for the walks. Most of the rooms and suites take dogs, of any size and up to two to a room, for €25 a night with no deposit. If you want an evening to yourselves, the hotel's own team will sit with your dog, or it may stay settled in the room while you go out.

Around the estate, your dog goes most places you do. Dogs are welcome in the lobby, the salon and on the restaurant terraces, with a dedicated Paw Garden, a private forest trail, poop bags at hand and a dog walking service. The staff are trained for canine guests, grooming can be arranged with a local groomer, and the concierge keeps an emergency vet's number to hand, which is a comfort a long way from home. In the Luberon Suites, the dog even has its own [private pool](https://coquillade.fr/en/pets.html?ref=rochsociety.com) to cool off in on hot Provençal days.

## Dinner From the K9 Sommelier

The signature thing at Coquillade, for a dog, is dinner. The kitchen's K9 Sommelier menu is built with the same care over sourcing as the food it cooks for people, every dish balanced around a dog's nutrition and carried to the room by a dedicated VIP room service. It is one of the best dog menus anywhere and a highlight of [our guide to the world's best hotel dog menus](https://rochsociety.com/a-guide-to-the-worlds-best-dog-food-menus-for-hotels-canine-fine-dining/), and the [menu itself](https://redirect3.dailypoint.de/public/a%5F27532%5FbFQgb/file/data/4404%5FMenu%5FCanin%5F%5F1%5F.pdf?ref=rochsociety.com) is three bowls at €25 each: Chicken and Garden Vegetables, chicken émincé with seasonal vegetables and rice; a Beef Provençal Bowl of slow cooked beef with vegetables and gentle herbs; and a light Turkey and Rice Bowl for an easy digestion.

Your own dinner is just as rooted in the estate. [Les Vignes & Son Jardin](https://coquillade.fr/en/les-vignes-and-its-garden.html?ref=rochsociety.com) cooks meats and fish over charcoal and carves them at the table, with organic vegetables and fruit picked steps from the kitchen, and in fine weather it moves outdoors to the Jardin dans les Vignes. Wine Spectator recognised its wine list in its Restaurant Awards for 2026\. At lunch, [Cipressa](https://coquillade.fr/en/cipressa.html?ref=rochsociety.com) serves Italian cooking under lemon trees, with Neapolitan pizzas from a wood fired oven, and [Bar Coquillade](https://coquillade.fr/en/bar.html?ref=rochsociety.com) pours the domaine's wines, its own cedar and citrus gin made with the Agora distillery, and keeps a cigar lounge for later.

## A Day Here With Your Dog

Start before the heat with the estate itself. The hotel's [vineyard and forest paths](https://coquillade.fr/en/pets.html?ref=rochsociety.com) run straight from the hamlet, so the first walk of the day is rows of vines, pine and oak, and a slow return for breakfast on the terrace. If the dog wants a hill, the Luberon park's own trail up [the Colline de Perréal](https://www.cheminsdesparcs.fr/trek/134811?ref=rochsociety.com) starts in Gargas, a loop of 4.1 kilometres and about an hour and a half that climbs through oak and pine to the ridge and the remains of a Gallic hill fort, then comes down to wide views over the valley.

The forest paths start at the hamlet

After lunch, take the short drive to Roussillon. The [Sentier des Ocres](https://en.luberon-apt.fr/nature-parks-gardens/sentier-des-ocres-2797879?ref=rochsociety.com) runs through the old ochre quarries below the village, and the Pays d'Apt Luberon tourist office lists it as accepting animals, as it does the great ochre canyons of the [Colorado Provençal](https://en.luberon-apt.fr/prepare-your-stay/sites-and-heritage/colorado-of-rustrel-2452651?ref=rochsociety.com) at Rustrel, mined for their colours by six generations of miners. Back at the hotel, leave the dog with the hotel's sitter for an hour in the spa, or in summer let it splash in its own pool on the suite terrace. Then dinner arrives on a tray from the K9 Sommelier while you pour a glass of the domaine's rosé and the cicadas start up again.

## Why It Matters

Plenty of grand hotels in Provence will take a dog. Coquillade has thought about everything a dog actually wants from a holiday: its own bed and bowls waiting in the room, a proper dinner made in the kitchen, a hamlet's worth of paths and forest from the front door, someone to sit with it when you go out, and a pool of its own when the afternoon gets hot. It does all of this in an 11th century hamlet among its own vines, in one of the loveliest corners of France. For anyone who has ever left the dog behind to go somewhere beautiful, this is the place that means you never have to again. [Book it](https://coquillade.fr/en/?ref=rochsociety.com), ask for the Very Important Pet welcome, and plan your days around the walks.

## Good to Know

Tell Reception or the Concierge that your dog is coming when you book, so the welcome is ready. The restaurant dining rooms and the pool area, including Bar Ange Bleu beside it, are kept for people, which room service and the terraces take care of. The calming spray and the scarf depend on the room category, and the dog pools are for the Luberon Suites only, on request at reception.
